One resident, Wolfgang Peter, said the deafening sound of the earth moving woke him up early in the morning. “First I heard the rushing of water, and then it sounded as if a dozen gravel trucks were being emptied,” Peter told the German newspaper Thuringer Allgemeine, according to Der Spiegel. … Jurgen Reinholz, a spokesman for the region of Thuringia, where Schmalkalden is located, told Der Spiegel he believed the cause of the sinkhole was likely a natural one and not related to excavations at a nearby salt mine.
